⁂ Happy New Year ⁂
What better way to start a new year than with more wig tips? Wigs, extensions, and other artificial hair products offer a great method to enhance your look without affecting your natural hair. But since synthetic hair is man-made, you'll need to follow a specific cleaning regimen to keep it silky over time.
After cleaning, a few easy care procedures will guarantee the hair's continued health. Check our guide on How to Wash a Synthetic Wig.

➊ Detangle ➊
Use a comb with large teeth to untangle the hair. Long hairs are ideal for most synthetic wigs and extensions because they are less prone to catch on individual strands than smaller ones. Use your fingers rather than a comb to clean a wig with tightly curled hair to prevent harming the hair. Spray the hair with water or a wig detangler to help loosen the strands if you're having trouble combing through it.
➋ Wash & Dry ➋
In a tub, combine shampoo and cool water. Put enough water in a sink to completely submerge your hair. Then, add 1 to 2 capfuls of a gentle, synthetic-safe shampoo, using a little more or a little less depending on the size of the wig or extension. To make a somewhat soapy solution, combine the water and shampoo.
Let it set, and rinse it. Repeat and add fabric softener or a conditioner for a synthetic wig.
Let it set, and rinse it. Dry it. Pad it with a towel and then let it air dry.

➌ Use Synthetic Wig Products ➌
Utilize hair care products designed especially for synthetic hair. You'll need to use various items to maintain the softness and cleanliness of synthetic hair because it is not created from the same materials as human hair.
Search for shampoos, conditioners, and other styling products made especially for wigs or synthetic hair. If your neighborhood supermarket does not carry these items, check out beauty and costume stores.
Hairspray should be avoided in particular because it can actively destroy the synthetic strands, even if you shouldn't use any regular hair treatments on wigs or extensions.
➍ Brush ➍
Use a comb with large teeth to comb your hair. Use a wide-tooth comb or brush to detangle your synthetic hair to prevent the bristles from getting tangled in the fiber strands. If at all feasible, invest in a styling product made especially for wigs.
Brush out the ends of your wig before going up to the roots to prevent damaging it.
➎ Plan & Record ➎
Try not over-wash your hair. You don't need to clean synthetic hair nearly as frequently as you would human hair because it is not impacted by the oil your body produces. Wash your synthetic hair about once a week if you wear it every day. If not, wash it approximately once every month to keep it supple.
➏ Have Specific Products ➏
Use as few hair products as possible. Too much hair product use over time can weaken and coarsen synthetic hair.
Stick to shampoos, conditioners, and shine sprays that are safe for synthetic hair to prevent this from happening. Avoid using gels and similar products unless they are particularly made for your type of wig or hair extension.
Use the least amount of styling product possible to prevent harming the hair.
➐ Avoid Heat ➐
Avoid exposing synthetic hair to very high temperatures. Both hot water and heated styling appliances like blow dryers, curling irons, and straightening irons fall under this category. Extreme heat will mess up the shape of your synthetic hair and irreversibly harm the strands unless the fibers are engineered to withstand heat.
If you'd like to curl your hair without using heat, consider using bendy rollers. They can produce curls of any size and are versatile, inexpensive, and effective.
➑ Remove Your Wig ➑
This one applies more to regular wig users and not so much to cosplayers.
At night, remove your synthetic hair. Synthetic hair's texture and shape can be irreparably damaged by bedhead. Take off your wig or extensions before sleeping to prevent this. Maintain extensions on a flat surface while keeping wigs on a wig head.
Try sleeping on a satin pillow or braiding your extensions before night if they are sewn in and cannot be removed.
And that's it! ♡
Those were a few care tips to maintain your synthetic wig healthy and usable for a longer period. I hope this helps and see you next Monday!
